Souad, directed by Global Media Makers and Film Independent Fellow Ayten Amin, revolves around the relationship of two teenage sisters in one of Egypt’s Nile Delta cities, where one of them holds a secret life in the virtual world. This timely film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and was the first film by an Egyptian woman to play in the Official Selection. Souad is Egypt’s official entry to the Best International Feature category for the 2022 Academy Awards.

Captains of Za’atari, directed by Global Media Makers Fellow Ali El Arabi, tells the story of two best friends, Mahmoud and Fawzi, who live in the Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan and have an undying dream of becoming professional soccer players while facing the difficult reality of their lives. Despite being locked in a space that has no facilities or opportunity for training, they remain hopeful and practice day in and day out. When a world-renowned sports academy visits, both have a chance to make this dream come true.
The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

The Criminals, a short film directed by Global Media Makers Fellow Serhat Karaaslan, is about a young couple looking for some privacy in a town in Turkey, but they are rejected from the hotels because they do not have a marriage certificate. When they think they have found a way, the situation gets out of hand.
The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Short Film Special Jury Award.
