The Mission of the Dean of Students Office is to support the co-curricular development of the artist and human being through the development of positive communities throughout the college. Whether in the classroom or around the globe, we are dedicated to developing leadership and fostering cross cultural dialogue that leads to a richer learning environment and healthier world to live in.

Meet the Team

Kelly Gardner, Dean of Students: Kelly Gardner is a facilitator of creativity.  With a diverse background in art, education, social action and theater/film/video production, Kelly has dedicated most of his life to the study and application of art for social change.  With an overriding belief that quality storytelling plays a  vital role in the health of every individual and society, he has developed a unique approach to healing through art and non-violent communication.  Mr. Gardner has received awards and recognition for his work as the artistic director of City at Peace Los Angeles as well as his educational programming in Washington DC for organizations including the Smithsonian Institute and Library of Congress. Dean Gardner joined the New York Film Academy in 2007 as a camera and directing instructor, before directing the Community Outreach Department, chairing the Diversity Department and now serving as the Dean of Students.   His passion for learning from other cultures has carried him across the globe, including teaching for NYFA in Beijing, Istanbul, Doha, Florence, and many more cities to come. In his time away from NYFA, Kelly is a loving husband and father, an avid cyclist, triathlete, surfer, volunteer soccer coach, yogi, and Kirtan Wallah 

Liam Gillen, Associate Dean of Students: Liam Gillen is a higher education administrator with over 16 years of experience advising undergraduate and graduate students, developing student leadership programs and working with students to maintain community standards. Prior to joining NYFA, he worked at the University of Southern California for 11 years where he served as the Program Manager for the Masters of Healthcare Administration program and was also the Director of Student Services at the USC Gould School of Law.  Outside of NYFA, Liam is a singer with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and has performed in venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He has also appeared in movie and television productions such as Why Him?, Modern Family, I Am Cait, Parks and Recreation, and the viral video Shia Labeouf is a Cannibal. Liam holds a Masters in Education with an emphasis in Postsecondary Administration & Student Affairs from the USC Rossier School of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Family and Community Services from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
