NYFA NY CAMPUS TEMPORARILY CLOSING TO PREVENT SPREAD OF ILLNESS

April 13, 2021, 7:00pm

Dear NYFA NY Community,

Today we have observed a contained but concerning spread of COVID-19 within our community. In an abundance of caution, we are, as of this evening, closing campus and transitioning all classes to the online environment.

There can be no in-person classes or productions, on and off-campus, for as long as campus is closed. Yet, all classes will continue online throughout this period of temporary closure. We anticipate being able to safely resume in-person classes and activities, both on and off campus, on April 26, 2021.

Your Department Chairs will be contacting you to provide support and additional guidance and instruction.

What we have observed today is described below:

Four members of the NYFA community have recently tested positive for COVID-19. All individuals sought off-campus testing upon experiencing mild COVID-19 related symptoms. These individuals, prior to symptom onset, had either been present on campus or participated in off-campus productions during their infectious period. Forty-four (44) individuals have been directed to self-quarantine.

The four individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 have been instructed to self-isolate. These four individuals all reside in the EHS residence facility. There is a spike of COVID-19 symptoms and/or illness among residents living on one wing of one floor of the EHS facility. Taking an abundance of caution, NYFA has directed all individuals living in this area of concern to self-quarantine. EHS has been notified and the facility managers are taking the appropriate actions to prevent the spread of illness within the EHS community. For questions, please contact the NYFA Housing Coordinator, Linda Gilbert via email (linda.gilbert@nyfa.edu)

As the B.1.1.7 variant becomes dominant throughout the US and, specifically in states in the Northeast, please be vigilant in following the health and hygiene guidelines noted below. This variant is highly transmissible and can easily spread between infected persons to those with whom they have had close contact.

Please stay vigilant by:
  • strictly following personal hygiene guidelines;
  • practicing physical distancing (keeping a 6 ft/2m distance from others);
  • wearing masks when venturing outside your homes; and
  • staying home when you are sick.
In abiding by these practices, you will limit your exposure to the virus and you will be doing all you can to stay healthy and protect the safety of our community.

For more tips on staying healthy and for guidance on how to access care should you become ill, please visit NYFA COVID-19 Health and Campus Guidelines and Information.

For ongoing updates of the incidence of illness on the NY NYFA Campus, please consult the NY Campus Dashboard.

Also, please report positive COVID-19 test results to your COVID-19 Team Administrator: covidteamny@nyfa.edu.

We thank you and applaud you for your cooperation!

With gratitude and appreciation,
NYFA NY COVID-19 Response Team
