FAQ

We offer individual, short term therapy as well as groups. Please see "Groups" tab for more information on current offerings. (We can add a groups tab with our flyers to update each semester.)

There are many reasons to seek therapeutic support. You might be experiencing new, sudden, or challenging stressors. You may want to support now to prevent anticipated stress (such as graduation or seasonal depression). There may be ongoing factors impacting your wellbeing. Common themes that come up in counseling include, but are not limited to:

  • Transition and Adjustment

  • Loneliness and Isolation

  • Anxiety and Worry

  • Overwhelming Sadness

  • Relationship Challenges

  • Eating Disorders

  • Trauma That Impacts Daily Life

  • Strengthen Social, Emotional, and Communication Skills

The best way to reach us is through email at counselingla@nyfa.edu. You can also reach out by phone 818-333-3558 or stop by our offices R401 and R402. If we're free you'll see our doors open while if we're in session, you'll see the plaques on our doors turned to "Do Not Disturb."

Counseling at NYFA is FREE to all currently enrolled students at NYFA, Los Angeles.

You can expect to fill out brief intake forms and meet with a therapist for a more detailed assessment. From there you will discuss your goals and make a plan for engagement (weekly sessions, biweekly, monthly, as needed) or you may be referred to an outside provider who can better meet your needs. If you want to continue therapy after working with NYFA counseling services, you might discuss referrals at that time.

If you're thinking about medication, you might talk to one of the therapists at NYFA counseling services. We can provide support, explore options, and provide a referral to a community provider. We do not provide medication management here at NYFA but we can link you to outside services.

Therapy is confidential. Unless you are in a life threatening emergency or you explicitly consent, we will not disclose that you engaged in our services.

If you are in a life threatening emergency, please dial 911. If you are in crisis between Monday-Friday 9am-6pm please reach out to us by phone (818-333-3558). Outside of those hours, if you are suicidal please call 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.

As a friend, you can support by listening and asking them what they need. If your friend is open to counseling, please feel free to share our contact information with them. Another option is to submit an anonymous report to your instructor or to the counseling services and the associate dean of students. Ultimately, therapy is voluntary and it's their decision to seek therapy when they're ready. You might notice you could benefit from additional support when a friend is struggling. You are also welcome and encouraged to seek our services as well.
