NYFA COVID-19 Testing Protocol & Requirements

NYFA COVID-19 Testing Protocol & Requirements

NYFA has established a COVID-19 Testing protocol to minimize and monitor the spread of COVID-19 within our community, as well as to safeguard our community’s health and safety.

Students and employees are required to get tested for COVID-19 when noted below. Please refer to individual campus guidelines for any additional campus-specific protocols.

At the start of a new semester and before the first day attending an
in-person class or activity

When participating in NYFA productions: testing protocols for productions and production workshops vary and are specific to each campus.

When experiencing one or more COVID-19 related symptom

When selected to participate in
on-campus testin
g (for campuses offering on-campus instruction)

This protocol is based on current information and guidance provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), medical publications, and NYFA’s public health consultant, Dr. Peter Bloland. This protocol will be reviewed and revised as new information emerges and public health directives are updated.

PRE-ENTRY TESTING:

All students/employees, regardless of vaccination status, are required to get a RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test and submit a report of their test results at the start of a semester and before they are scheduled to participate in an in-person class or activity.

To gain entry to campus and participate in an in-person class or activity, the report must indicate that a RT-PCR Test COVID-19 was administered within 7 days of the first day of in-person class or activity and that the test result was negative.

Please allow time for your test results to be processed. Depending on your location, it may take 2-3 days for you to receive your test results.

Please know that negative results from a Rapid Antigen COVID-19 test will not be accepted at this time.  Only negative results from a RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test will meet requirements for campus entry and participation in your first in-person class or activity scheduled for the semester.

It is the responsibility of the student/employee to meet the pre-entry testing requirement and seek off-campus testing.

Students/employees not present on campus and/or not attending NYFA activities for 4 weeks or longer are required to submit negative RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test results to their COVID-19 Team Administrators before gaining entry again to an in-person class or activity.  In other words, submitting an initial negative RT-COVID-19 diagnostic test result at the beginning of the semester does not validate re-entry to campus and in-person classes or activities if a student/employee has not been present on campus, or participating in NYFA activities, for four weeks or longer.

Please submit your COVID-19 RT-PCR Diagnostic Test Result Reports to your campus COVID-19 Team Administrator:

LA Campus: covidteamla@nyfa.edu

NY Campus: covidteamny@nyfa.edu

SB Campus: covidteamsb@nyfa.edu

All COVID-19 Team Administrators are trained to keep your information private and your test results are securely filed in accordance with CDC and OHSA privacy laws.

If you test positive for COVID -19, stay home, self-isolate, leave your home only to seek medical care, and contact the appropriate campus staff and your campus COVID-19 Team administrator.

Pre-entry testing is mandatory for students/employees who are participating in hybrid learning and participating in NYFA in-person classes and activities. At the present time, only students/employees meeting the condition described below are excused from pre-entry testing.

  • The student/employee is recovered from COVID-19 and submits to the COVID-19 Team Administrator a COVID-19 Test Result Report that confirms:
    • a positive test result, and
    • the COVID-19 diagnostic test was administered more than 10 days prior and no more than 90 days beyond the first day of campus entry.

TESTING FOR PRODUCTIONS AND PRODUCTION WORKSHOPS

Submitting negative RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test result reports is required to participate in productions, and possibly production workshops.

Students/employees who are fully vaccinated and have submitted proof of immunization against COVID-19 are exempt from the pre-production/production workshop testing requirements.

For information on testing requirements for production and production workshops, please refer to guidelines distributed by your campus administrators and your department chairs.

For general guidelines on COVID-19 testing protocols and other health and safety precautions specific to NYFA physical productions, please read the COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidelines for NYFA Physical Productions, included in the NYFA COVID Safety Plan.

SYMPTOM TESTING:

Students/employees are also required to get a RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test if and when they feel sick and report or experience one or more COVID-19 related symptoms.

It is the responsibility of the student/employee to meet the symptom testing requirement and seek off-campus testing.

If you are experiencing one or more COVID-19 related symptoms and are scheduled to attend an in-person class or activity, STAY HOME PLEASE and report your symptoms immediately to the NYFA COVID-19 Symptom Tracker.  If you are feeling sick and are not scheduled to attend an in-person class or activity, please report your symptoms to your COVID-19 Team Administrator via email or do so using the NYFA COVID-19 Symptom Tracker.

At this time, no one is excused from symptom testing, including students/employees who have been fully or partially vaccinated. Students/employees who report or experience COVID-19 related symptoms who have tested positive for COVID-19 within 90 days will be required to seek medical consultation or get tested, especially if their symptoms are new and unexplained.  Your COVID-19 Administrator will provide guidance.

Students/employees who report or experience one or more COVID-19 related symptoms will be required to self-isolate.

If you report or experience one or more COVID-19 related symptoms, you will only be permitted to enter campus and/or participate in in-person class or activities once you submit to your COVID-19 Team Administrator a COVID-19 RT-PCR diagnostic test report indicating negative findings. Your COVID-19 Team Administrator will advise you on when it is safe to return to campus and participate in a NYFA in-person class or activity.

Please know that negative results from a Rapid Antigen COVID-19 test will not be accepted to gain entry to campus or any in-person class or activity after having had one or more COVID-19 related symptoms.  Only negative results from a RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic test will meet requirements for ending isolation and resuming participation in NYFA in-person classes or activities.

NYFA ON-CAMPUS SURVEILLANCE TESTING:

On-campus surveillance testing will begin the first week your campus reopens for on-campus classes and activities. Surveillance testing is particularly important to identify individuals in our community who have no symptoms but harbor the novel coronavirus and can potentially transmit the virus to others.

Find out more from the CDC on Surveillance Testing.

Students/employees who are fully vaccinated and have submitted proof of immunization against COVID-19 are exempt from on-campus surveillance testing requirements:

On campus surveillance testing will be provided to students and employees at no cost.

NYFA has partnered with Binx Health to offer the community access to quality RT-PCR COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Each week approximately 25% of the campus population will be randomly selected to participate in on-campus surveillance testing.

Participation in on-campus surveillance testing is mandatory for students and employees scheduled to participate in classes and activities held on-campus.  Students under the age of 18 will need parental/legal guardian consent to participate in mandatory on-campus surveillance testing.

Same-Day Notification

You will be notified via the NYFA COVID-19 Symptom Tracker upon reporting your symptoms or by the COVID-19 Team Administrator, when you arrive on campus, if you have been selected for on-campus surveillance testing. You will then be informed  when and where to report that day for testing.  At the time of your testing appointment, you will receive clear instructions on how to self-administer the Binx COVID -19 RT-PCR nasal swab test.

Collecting Your Sample

The procedure to collect your sample for analysis is simple, quick and comfortable and you will be provided instructions and guidance on how to self-administer your test.  All you will need to bring to the testing room is a pen and either a smartphone, tablet, or computer to activate your kit and set up your account. All other necessary materials, including detailed collection instructions, are included in the collection kit.

To activate your testing kit, you will need to use your NYFA email address.  A personal email address will not be recognized by Binx and will not be accepted to activate your account.

For additional and detailed information on the Binx nasal swab RT-PCR test, how to collect your sample, and how to access your test results, please review the On-Campus Surveillance FAQ by CLICKING HERE.

Your Test Results

Reports of test results will be sent directly to you, through a private online portal, and to NYFA, provided authorizations for release of information are signed.

Test reports will be privately secured and the few individuals authorized to read and receive such reports are trained to observe all relevant privacy laws.  NYFA will send test kits to the lab for processing and results, once specimens reach the lab, will be reported to the individual and to the school within 48 hours.

The community incidence of positive COVID-19 test results will be accessible to all students and employees on the NY Campus Dashboard, the LA Campus Dashboard, and the SOBE Campus Dashboard.  The information posted on the Campus Dashboards reflects the incidence rates of COVID-19 within our community of faculty, staff and students participating in in-person classes and activities.
