Counseling- NY

Scope of Practice

Counseling Services at NYFA provide short-term, solution-focused counseling to eligible students. Students whose needs fall outside of the scope of practice will be referred to community resources so that their needs can be appropriately met. These referrals can be made at the initial intake/consultation as well as when a student is engaged in therapy on campus and the need is assessed through work with a campus therapist. Some examples of clinical issues that will likely be addressed with a referral to community resources include but are not limited to:

  • Individuals with chronic mental health conditions that require long-term, ongoing care.
  • Clinical presentations, such as some personality disorders, that indicate short-term treatment would be ineffective.
  • A need or desire to be seen more frequently than Counseling Service can accommodate: most clients are seen once per week or bi-weekly.
  • Chronic suicidality and/or recent history of multiple suicide attempts.
  • Severe or chronic self-injury.
  • Recent or multiple psychiatric hospitalizations.
  • Specialized issues such as eating disorders or substance abuse treatment.
  • Active symptoms of psychosis.
